This doesn't happen often, but when it does its always at an inconvenient time [this time around it was after 6 weeks uptime in the X session with multiple protocol sniffing windows open, each to a different trouble ticket I'm working on, eegads!].
The symptom: Neither old nor new windows can be dragged around the desktop. Trying to do so changes the cursor to the right shape indicating the window can move, but dragging just doesn't work: THe windows are all stuck in place.
I can open as many windows as I like, delete them, change workspaces, but I can't move any of them.
Can't resize windows, either, but I can maximize and minimize windows - can even pin and un-pin.
From past experience I know that closing the KDE session and restarting X takes care of it. But as I said, I can't close down right now, but I definitely need to reposition windows.
Sound familiar?

Never experienced something similar. Kwin seems to be alive, since you say that you can still operate the relevant menu to send windows to another desktops, right?
Maybe kwin gets corrupted for any strange reason (what kde version are you using btw?). A temporal workaround until you figure out what is happening would be to "killall kwin && kwin&", that will kill and relaunch a new kwin instance that, hopefully, should be working... |
