|
|
Hello .... I want to be able to install a working GNOME desktop. The problem I am having is that whenever I emerge gnome, I get a BUNCH of stuff I never use and do not want to waste my time compiling. The question is, how can I install a basic gnome environment so that I may emerge the individual applications I need? |

Well, since the beginning, gnome was just a window manager, panel and file manager. Lots of things have changed ... like nautilus as file manager ... but still, what makes gnome gnome are those basic components (I have been using gnome since the early days). What I do not want or need are the EXTRA stuff they pack onto it like gnome-games, epiphany and a dozen or so other tools and applications I do not want or need.
Lots of distributions have ways of installing just a BASIC gnome environment that does NOT included all that crap. I just didnt know what the ebuild was to do it. Well, im sure I could have just installed all of the components one at a time ... but im much too lazy for that! |

I understand, I don't like KDE/Gnome bacause of those deps either. I don't know what gnome-light installs, but I assume it's the bare minimum. |

You can find out, with:
Code: | emerge -pv gnome-light |
Or look at the ebuild in /usr/portage/gnome-base/gnome/ _________________ Improve your font rendering and ALSA sound |

Its exactly what I need! Its the bare minimum without any applications .. the menus are baren just the way I like it. Now I can just emerge the specific packages I need. |
