|
|
The other day while doing an emerge -uD world my machine froze. Now it won't boot either
the linux or windows side. When I try to boot gentoo I get
Code: |
<o> kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
|
and when I try to boot the windows xp side I get
Code: |
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: System32\Drivers\Ntfs.sys
|
I have found a few things regarding the Windows problem (e.g.http://win-xp-sp.blogspot.com/2004/11/windows-could-not-start-because_30.html)
(and I did recently install SP2), but the fact that it won't let me boot either OS suggests that it is a deeper issue, perhaps
system related?
I have recently enabled ntfs read and write support in my gentoo kernel if that would matter. Suggestions?
Thanks. |

I think is hardware-related issue. Check if you harddrive isn't broken. _________________ Damian Florczyk

The OSs are on two different drives, so I doubt both of them would have died simultaneously.
I found a google result that said it might be a problem with memory. I'm going to test the
memory when I get home this evening. |

Recompiling your kernel and/or re-running your bootloader might fix it. (You can use the LiveCD or any bootable linux cd to get into your system) |

The system won't boot either a Gentoo Livecd or the Windows XP installation CD. |

Do you mean that it tries to boot from these CDs and fails, or that it ignores them when you switch on the power? Obviously, if it's the latter, you need to make sure that your BIOS is set to enable booting from CDs... if it's the former, could you post the errors? |

Fails to boot. Gentoo LiveCD doesn't give any errors, just a black screen.
The windows xp gives one of two different errors:
Code: |
setupdd.sys could not be loaded
|
Which error occurs seems to be random, but after trying to boot several
times these two were the only ones I saw.
I'm hopeful that memtest86 will tell me I have a RAM error, and replacing
the offender will fix things.

If you can somehow get the windows xp installation disc to load, you should be able to run the windows repair program. Why the livecd doesn't even load is beyond me, though. Did you try pressing any of the function buttons when that happened? (mainly F2) |

I tried several times with the WinXP disc with no success.
I should have been more explicit about the LiveCD. I get the boot prompt, enter gentoo,
it starts off and running then goes blank. |

I know that for the more recent livecd's there is a gentoo 'splash' image which takes up the whole screen for all of the loading, but you can take it off by hitting F2 (hence I asked) but from what you're describing it isn't loading properly. Since this is happening in both Windows and Gentoo, it would lead me to guess that it would be a hardware problem. Did you notice what the last things to load on the livecd are before it goes blank? |

I didn't notice the last things that loaded. If the memory checks out tonight, then I'll boot the livecd
again and pay closer attention and try F2. |

I've got this problem. I have had it on and off for about a year. Usually what I did was turn off the pc, UNPLUG the power cable for about 1 hour then afterwards try again.
Unfortunately it started getting more frequent and now it has given up the ghost all together. WinXP install or CD doesnt work, Gentoo install or live CD doesnt work, Knoppix liveCD doesnt work etc.....
Give the power cable thing a bash. |

yeah I did the memtest86 thing myself and immediately came a massive stream of errors. Removed offending RAM chip and voila.
Now ive only got half ram now |
