exploring package dependencies

Is there a short way of finding which packages depend on particular package other than writing my own script? Or similar: list all packages that no other package depends on, so you can safely unmerge them without breaking dependencies.

nothing built into emerge as of yet that i know of ... i did see a perl script on the forum a few days ago that did it ... i tried it dont know where i put the code but it wasnt the most efficient script took forever actually. Hopefully the devs will be buildig some kind of accounting into portage soon so we can lookup and see all teh deps.

I've got the same question: I can't emerge the new baselayout-1.8.2 because there are two versions of gawk installed and the older one blocks the new baselayout. But how can I find out if some program needs the old version before I unmerge it?

Is there something new to say about this issue?

still have yet to hear anythign new on this but i havent really been looking any one remember where that perl script to lookup dependancies of a port is? i lost it

Pretty much all you have to do is a forum search for posts by Naan Yaar in the Documentation, Tips and Tricks forum. Find packages that have a dependency on a specified package and Script that will list package deps. that can be removed.
