hi,
i'm trying to get samba to authenticate against the shell-accounts, but no matter what i try (in /etc/pam.d/samba) it won't work.
Clients are WindowsXP-Machines.
Can someone please kick me into the right direction?
thx! _________________ --

Doesn't work, unfortunately.
You could let both Samba and PAM authenticate against MySQL or LDAP, the latter of which is certainly the more common approach.
I recommend people with less than 20 users to maintain smbpasswd and /etc/shadow separately, or through scripts that run both at the same time. LDAP is great, but difficult to maintain when new versions of OpenLDAP and Samba arrive.
If you still want to do it, have a look here:
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_LDAP_SAMBA_PDC
The neat thing is that all sorts of things, including applications, can authenticate against LDAP. |

hi,
thx for the tip, but openldap was my first try. So i tried setting it up, after lots of trouble (following different howto's on *.gentoo.org) i got it running, but samba just wouldn't authenticate the windows-clients. So i'm now trying pam, and already have gotten proftpd, cyrus and apache2 to athenticate against pam.
The only thing missing is samba. In the meantime i found out it is possible to synchronize the samba-passwords when runnung 'passwd', but couldn't find anything that worked. I'll post back if i can come up with sth. _________________ --

ok, after some trouble i', thinking again about setting up ldap...
But how do i get the samba-passwords = /etc/shadow ? As far as i looked into it, that howto creates different fieds for sambaLMpassword, sambaNTpasswd and userpasswd ?
How do i get only 1 password for all? _________________ --
