|
|
Hello,
I am new to installing "from scratch". I chose to use metalog over syslog or syslong-ng because it's small and simple. The version I have has buffering off by default. The man page says you can turn it on. I understand it affects real-time logging, but I have 2 questions:
- What would be the benefit of turning buffering on?
- Does this have any effect on other aspects of Linux/does this affect system-wide buffering or only buffering in metalog?

I recall a recent mail thread on gentoo-dev talking about whether or not metalog should fullfill the virtual/logger or not. In that thread, buffering was brought up. It is only in regards to metalog itself; not the entire system. Wish I remember more, but you can read it for yourself and draw the same conclusions without me butchering it. I believe it's on gmane.org at: http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.gentoo.devel/31841. |
