What is required to get vlc working from portage on PPC?

I noticed it was marked ~PPC, and also noticed that PPC seems to be supported by the developers, so I went ahead and attempted to emerge it.

It failes (for me anyway) at <workdir>/modules/video_filter complaining that a bunch of stuff is undeclared in function "MergeAltivec" ... very mysterious.
I added the "altivec" USE flag but that didn't make any difference.

Here are my other USE flags in case they will help:
Code:
[ebuild  N    ] media-video/vlc-0.8.2-r2  (-3dfx) +X +a52 +aac +aalib -alsa -altivec -arts +bidi +cdda +corba +daap -debug +dts +dvb +dvd +esd +fbcon +ffmpeg +flac +freetype -ggi +gnutls +httpd -joystick +libcaca -lirc +live +matroska +mod +mp3 +mpeg +ncurses +nls +nsplugin +ogg +opengl +oss +png +samba +screen +sdl +speex +stream +svg (-svga) +theora +unicode -v4l +vcd +vlm +vorbis -wxwindows +xml2 +xosd +xv 0 kB

Any ideas?

Thanks! :-)

Since none of the devs have been able to test this, I'd appreciate some feedback as to what worked/didn't work for you.

In my case I can't get vlc installed because graphiz doesn't emerge:
Code:
# emerge -auNDtv vlc

These are the packages that I would merge, in reverse order:

I emerged vlc sometime last week, I think I had to keyword
libebml as well as vlc.
I have an iMac G4, my CFLAGS are as follow:
Code:
CFLAGS="-O2 -mcpu=7450 -pipe -maltivec -mabi=altivec -mpowerpc-gfxopt -fsigned-char -frename-registers -fweb -fno-
strict-aliasing"

and I used the following USE flags:
Code:
emerge -pv vlc

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild   R   ] media-video/vlc-0.8.4a  (-3dfx) +X +a52 +aac +aalib +alsa +altivec +arts -avahi -bidi +cdda -corba +daap -debug +dts +dvb +dvd +esd +fbcon +ffmpeg +flac +ggi +gnutls +hal -httpd -joystick -libcaca -lirc +live +matroska +mod +mp3 +mpeg +ncurses +nls -nsplugin +ogg +opengl +oss +png (-real) +samba -screen +sdl +shout +skins -speex +stream +svg (-svga) +theora +truetype -v4l +vcd -vlm +vorbis (-win32codecs) +wxwindows -xinerama +xml2 -xosd +xv 0 kB

My main problem is I never managed to use vlc correctly on linux (both x86 and ppc), I have been playing
ogg file with vlc on OSX for a while but when I try to open a file in linux for some reason I have no output.
I do not usually use vlc on linux for that reason, other players are doing fine.

[edit] I had the extra keyworded package wrong it should be libebml I think [\edit]

If you're running Gnome I can highly recommend the built-in Totem Movie Player. I have VLC installed on Mac OS X on this machine and it is barely able to deal with the various AVI's I throw at it, while Totem just totally excels in playback. I mean, it's night and day; no comparison between the two.

Maybe VLC under Linux would fare better, but I'm not sure I understand why that would be so.

I am a KDE person. I have no problem with vlc on OSX. Only on linux.
And I am not talking about movies usually but about music.
Ogg and mp3 just don't play. I have to check on my x86 box
but I have basically the same problem open a music file and sit
here waiting....... Nothing happens.
I have a feeling something fundamental escapes me but what?

At the moment I am test driving kaffeine, after having used juk and
xmms. They all do all right in most respect. I will probably also test
amarok quite a bit before settling.

Notice it's still ~ppc in portage, but it Installed OK for me, However I've got the following problem,

Code:

VLC media player 0.8.4a Janus
Remote control interface initialized, `h' for help
libdvdnav: Using dvdnav version 0.1.10 from http://dvd.sf.net
status change: ( New input: dvd:// )
status change: ( audio volume: 256 )
status change: ( play state: 1 )
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.9 for DVD access
libdvdnav: DVD Title: Memento
libdvdnav: DVD Serial Number: bf27821a
libdvdnav: DVD Title (Alternative): Memento
libdvdnav: Unable to find map file '/home/graeme/.dvdnav/Memento.map'

libdvdread: Attempting to retrieve all CSS keys

[00000242] main audio output error: couldn't find a filter for the first part of the conversion
[00000242] main audio output error: couldn't set an input pipeline

Looks like a Gnome/audio config problem to me. My Desktop->Preferences->Multimedia Systems Selector settings are as follows

Audio

Default Sink
Output:ALSA
Pipeline:alsasink

Default Source
Input:ALSA
Pipeline:alsasrc

This matches the keys in gconf, but the Audio Default Source Test button causes the application to hang!? Also, what's the best way to add VLC to my Gnome menus?

I can emerge vlc with no problem. Actually using it is another story. The plugin crashes every browser. The player doesn't play anything and seg faults.
