Hey guys,

This doesn't really relate to Gentoo, but I am running Gentoo on the machine in question.

I recently obtained two "broken" computers. One computer just had a bad power supply so I just swapped the power supply from the other "broken" computer.

The stats on this new fixed computer are thus:
AMD XP 2000+
MSI motherboard (sorry, forgot the exact figures)
Nvidia Gefore2 MX 100 DDR/200 DDR
Power Supply(300Watts).

Over all, not a bad computer to get for free. I installed Linux(gentoo) and it runs great. I didn't like the graphics card though so I swapped it out for another card I have in an older machine: Nvidia Geforce 4 ti 4200.

I put in the newer card, plugged everything back in (monitor, power, mouse/keyboard etc..) and tried to turn the computer back on.... with no luck, it wouldn't power on. Put the older card back in and it started fine. Put the newer card in and still did not power on. Then I tried unplugging everything (except the power of coarse) and tried turning it on again.....and it DID power on. As it was booting I plugged in the monitor and it POWERED OFF (like I pulled the power plug).

My question is, is this a power problem? Do I need to get a stronger power supply? and if so, why is the power adequate when the monitor is not plugged in, but not enough when it is plugged in? The monitor has it's own power supply, it shouldn't be drawing off the comp at all.

The newer card works great in another computer of mine, so the card is not faulty. And I would really doubt it's a compatibility issue between the newer card and the motherboard.

Any thoughts?

I need more info on your pc, what other components does it have, pci cards, ide drives, how much ram sticks... ventilation coolers. etc

Im guessing that your system takes like 250 watt at peak utilization

And your PSU is 300watt, very close though.
Its also about quality, i had a 350watt PSU but couldnt handle my three HD's and 1 DVD writer, the harddisks tried to go on at boot but the PSU could barely handle the spinups of the drives, they often lose power and then power back on.

After i switched it with another 350watt PSU all was fine!

0 PCI cards plugged in
1 ide drive
1 cdrom drive
1 floppy drive
3 180MB ram sticks (not sure of the speeds, etc off the top of my head)
3-4 fans (1 fan on the cpu, 1 vent fan on the case, powersupply has a fan, newer nvidia card has a fan (old one does not))

Well, i still think you should try another PSU.

What you can do as well is instead of putting in that geforce 4 ti card, put the old card back in where the pc would want to start up and just put in some other things, like harddrives, pci cards, and see if it still wants to start up...

My second guess is that that geforce 4 ti videocard is just bad.

My pc it at peak utilization like 288 watt, and the first psu (350watt) couldnt handle it, the other 350 watt psu could...

I didn't want to go buy a new PSU until I was sure that's what the problem is.

I don't have enough hardware to test that theory. How much juice do you think each nvidia card uses?

The geforce 4 ti works fine in an older gateway P3 500 MHZ machine of mine.... so thats not it.

Those nvidia geforce 4 mx and fx cards use about 30-35 watt (mostly at peak utilization only when you play games for instance)

So if you startup your pc i doubt it would use that much...

Dont you have any other psu?

Not one that is any better(more wattage) then the current one in that computer.

I just came up with a new theory, but i dont think if its applicable with your situation :p

It seems that pc with the geforce 4 ti just wont start anymore at all, it doesnt even try to go on it seems, and your sure it works. what about looking into the agp slot/interface... voltage?
Could be a agp 4x/8x problem, because on new boards with agp8x its dangerous to put in 3.3v cards because agp8x is 1.5v.

I think there are some geforce 4 ti 4200 who dont have agp 8x, but i gotta go brb in 2 hours or so ;)
