would it be possible to put distcc on the boot cd ? I usually have only two gentoo boxes here at work but there are always some coworkers away so their boxes are off usually...

it would be cool if i just could boot them with a gentoo cd to have them as compile boxes if i need them :)

This will only work ofcourse if distcc never uses any disk space to store temporary objects.

If it does, distcc will have to be rewritten to use en environement variable to determine where to save temporary obejcts. Then it should be possible to build a ram disk and point the variable to it.

Check out the docs on distcc to see how it works with temporary objects.

As far as I remember it's possible to give the cd a parameter at syslinux prompt to put the rootfs into a ramdisk :)

I love the idea of being able to use my 3 other machines to temporary help compile code, but I can't get imageboot to work for me. Can anyone help me with this or ftp/send a iso file of a boot cd/disk?

Also could Knoppix be used for this?

Thanks for any help, Moat.

I thought that it mounted the CD into RAM anyway? (you can add directories to the CD filesystem, etc - it is RW)
