A mate of mine has purchased UT2004 just to be able to play RedOrchestra, yet it's almost impossible to find the correct download .run file. We've gone to the 'official' sites, but their so-called linux zip file only contains Window's exe. Is this just a coincidence, or is RedOrchestra fading out of the picture? :(

I used the installer from the www.liflg.org site. You'll find a proper installer for Red Orchestra here

For that one, the torrent keeps stalling, and the 'direct' link fails with 'unknown error'. :(

You can find some download links to the zipped version of RO from RO's site. You just unzip it into the root directory of UT2004 so that there is directory called "redorchestra" and then you can start RO with "ut2004 -mod=redorchestra" (ut2004 = script in UT2004's root directory, you can use the ut2004-bin too which is in System directory of UT2004).

Though the good news is that RO is becoming it's own standalone game... The bad news is that they probably aren't going to make Linux version of the standalone game... I don't have any official information about possible Linux client, but they said (I think) that there's not going to be Mac OSX client. And it's very unlikely that they are going to develop the mod version of RO anymore (one or two new versions maybe). So play when you can, and prey that Wine or Cedega is able to run the standalone version (based on UT2004 basicly).

Linux allways was an after thought with the redOrchestra developers. Shame because it is an outstanding game.
No linux version no $$$$$$!

That is EXTREMELY disheartening... I'm getting real tired of developers playing with a game in Linux, just to drop it and move to M$-only development. I refuse to purchase their new game unless there is native Linux support. Someone's got to start thinking about the Linux community, again (in gaming). Enemy-Territory is fun, but it's nothing compared to the RO mod.

I don't know what it is, but why do game developers feel that the Linux community would not pay for a game? We aren't a bunch of cheap jerks, I would pay top dollar for a good game in Linux. I've purchased UT, UT2003, UT2004, Serious Sam2, and many other games just to play them in Linux (I don't use Windows).

**EDIT: btw, almost every time I log onto RO I meet at least one fellow Linux user. It's a shame the developers are giving that kind of popularity up.

But are either of those focused on realism like RedOrchestra is? I've not found a game yet. Only close one is Hidden and Dangerous 2, and that's Winblows-only.. :(

First of all, they haven't said (yet) that there's not going to be Linux version. So don't send the nukes at their direction before they actually say so. ;) Second of all:
Quote:
I've been told that Linux and Mac client support are dependent on Valve releasing Steam clients for those platforms.

That being said by some fan, so it's just rumor. And yes, they use steam to distribute it. And no, there's no Linux version of steam, and the Windows one doesn't work well on Linux. It's very understandable why they use Steam (instead of boxed version atleast), but I don't see why they couldn't release Linux/Mac version through it anyway (just add the Linux and Mac binaries to the Windows package?).

One thing on the other hand is that they won the licence for the Unreal Engine 2.5 (costs 350 000$ or so btw, and they are even allowed to make money with it) from the Make Something Unreal -competition... But does the licence include Linux/Mac version too? They can make a Windows game with it easy, but do they need to port the engine to Linux/Mac or can they use the port that Icculus made? (Epic didn't port UT2004 to Linux/Mac, Icculus did) That will ofcourse play it's own role in the possibility of Linux/Mac version...

I would ofcourse like to see Linux version of it too, cause I do like the game. But it's just much more easier to make a mod for game that works on the Linux version of the game, than porting a whole game to another platform...

I doubt there will be a linux version - Steam is very windows dependant, and VALVe is unlikely to port it to other OSes just for RO (none of their games run on Linux, they're also very windows dependant.. They, and RO, are worth using that shoddy hunk of junk they like to call an OS for however)..

I'm just going to post in their forums that if they don't have a linux version I'm not going to buy it. I think everyone who wants a linux version should do the same. There is the problem of the engine but hasn't unreal always worked in linux? But I guess thats their problem not mine.

If you haven't posted already, please don't post it like that. That's a negative way of approaching it. Just let them know there is a strong Linux crowd that would wholeheartedly purchase the game, and it'd likely be worth the effort to pursue. :)
