I am getting strange log messages in my system logs regarding network modules. It has been happening since the beginning of my install and I can find no reason for it. Here is the log entries:

Nov 5 13:00:50 [modprobe] modprobe: Can't locate module eth3
Nov 5 13:00:50 [modprobe] modprobe: Can't locate module eth4
Nov 5 13:00:50 [modprobe] modprobe: Can't locate module eth5
Nov 5 13:00:50 [modprobe] modprobe: Can't locate module eth6
Nov 5 13:00:50 [modprobe] modprobe: Can't locate module eth7

I do have 3 network cards in the machine (and none are built as modules). I really don't have any modules setup and not much installed on the machine. What would be causing modprobe to try and load a module for a non-existent network card?

Ehh, why load eth 3-7 don't think there is such modules. Look in /etc/modules.auotload.d/kenrel-2.4 or kernel.2.6 etc

That's the problem - this is a new install and the modules.autoload.d files are all empty to the defaults. I can find no reference to these other net cards anywhere that I know to look.

if you run mii-tool 'bare', it will attempt to probe 8 (0-7) ethx devices (it's pretty dumb, but powerful).

I wouldn't worry about it until you are up and running.

That makes perfect sense! I have been running mii-tool to try and straighten out my autonegotiation problems multiple times per day. I will leave it alone.

Thanks a lot! That was really bugging me!
