I've recently purchased an external usb hard drive and I'm trying to get my linux to recognise it so that I can then backup a bunch of files.
I can't seem to find how to mount and format it though. I know this is probably a trivial exercise, but I'm still new to linux. The manual for the hdd says that it is preformatted as a single FAT32 partition.
A dmesg gives this:

anyone? sorry to bump, but this has me stumped!
I think I need to somehow allow it to mount itself at /dev/sda1, but I don't have any sda devices anywhere in /dev! |

Have you configured your kernel for usb mass storage devices (requires scsi disk support) and loaded the module?

Personally, I haven't. But I wasn't the one who setup and installed gentoo on it....
How do I find out if its already done and/or configure and recompile the kernel?
EDIT:
I've tried recompiling the kernel (I think I did it right), but still nothing! in my /usr/src dir I have the following:
* linux-2.4.20-gentoo-r2
* linux-2.4.20-gentoo-r3
* linux-2.4.20-gentoo-r5
* linux-2.4.26-gentoo-r6
* linux-2.6.5-rc2-mm3
When the computer boots grub shows two kernels, a red hat one and a 2.6 one (default). So I went into /usr/src/linux-2.6.5-rc2-mm3 and did
Code: |
# make menuconfig //made suitable changes here as per http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/usb-guide.xml
# make && make modules_install
|
When I reboot I still only get the same two original kernel options appearing in GRUB and still no USB HDD support.
In my search for the answer I found that any USB mass storage device is located at /dev/sda but in my /dev directory I have no sda options! Is this due to the kernel problem above or something else? |

Boot into the kernel with the drive unplugged, and as root use Code: | tail -f /var/log/messages | (or whatever file you're logging to) to get a live view on the log. Then plug the drive in and hope that it gets recongnized. Example: Code: | Nov 14 21:36:29 danielsrasepc usb 5-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2
Nov 14 21:36:29 danielsrasepc usb 5-2: not running at top speed; connect to a high speed hub

Read http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/kernel-upgrade.xml to learn about installing kernels.

So it appears that the system recognizes it, I just can't seem to access it... |

I could be wrong here, but actually, it seems that the drive is not recognised.
If you will notice the posting by tuam the scsi and usb-storage modules fire up to "claim" the usb drive...

while it seems that they do not in your case:
Code: | Nov 15 08:15:09 pylorus kernel: usb.c: USB device 3 (vend/prod 0x1058/0x403) is not claimed by any active driver. |
As I think tuam stated in an earlier post, ensure that you have usb mass storage support and the scsi subsystem support compiled either in the kernel or as modules and loaded. _________________ All reality is the construct of the observer.

Maybe you could start with http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/usb-guide.xml

I can't seem to upgrade my kernel.
Currently GRUB lists two kernels:
* Gentoo 2.6
* RedHat
I am following the instructions here: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/usb-guide.xml and here: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=7, but a new kernel just won't appear in GRUB. Also, I can only seem to download gentoo-2.4.31-r1... I can't get a 2.6 kernel even though one is already installed!
In my /usr/src/ directory I have the following:
- linux-2.4.20-gentoo-r2
- linux-2.4.26-gentoo-r6
- linux-2.4.20-gentoo-r3
- linux-2.4.20-gentoo-r5
- linux-2.6.5-rc2-mm3
- linux-2.4.31-gentoo-r1
What the shit is going on?? All I want is USB mass storage support... who would have though linux could be so painful! |
