I have xorg 6.8.2 , kde 3.4.1, latest nvidia drivers and the proper xorg.conf options but can't find kompmgr on my system.
xcompmgr and transset work.
From the translucency tab of the window behaviour tab in the control panel..

| kompmgr is part of the kwin package, I don't think it's available separately, and there doesn't seem to be a USE flag to toggle it on or off. I know for a fact that it's in 3.5, and pretty sure it's in 3.4.3, but I really can't tell you much more than that. If you've got some time to kill, maybe try upgrading. |

| OK, thanks. I emerged world a couple of days a go (took two days!), I'll emerge kde again. |

I emerged kde-3.4.3 and it's there.

I have it on a kde 3.5 system. Try emerging kwin with the xcomposite use flag (the flag is also used by kdebase and kicker) |
