I have recently upgraded to a amd64 athlon 3500 with a Asus A8V Deluxe mainboard from a athlon xp cpu. Originally I had gentoo running on the x86 platform, so I downloaded the amd64 live cd to reinstall gentoo on second hard drive. After checking my "system info" on windows hard drive it shows
Code:
"system type= x86 based pc & processor as x86 family
So my question is do I need to install with the amd64 live cd or can I still use the x86live cd?? The only differences I noticed in the handbooks was that the amd64 install documents doesnt give the option of lilo in configuring the bootloader.

spalmere,

You can run either. However, a x86 (32 bit install) cannoy run 64 bit software. An amd64 intsll can run both if you include the 32 bit libraries. lilio is no an option on amd64 installs, since it won't work in 64 bit mode yet.

It all depends on if you want a 64-bit OS or a 32-bit OS. If you want a 64-bit system, then install amd64. If you only want a 32-bit system, go ahead and use the old cd and packages.

Thank you for your help in this matter. I will try to run the amd64 so I can run either 32bit and 64 bit applications. (64 bit when more become available for gentoo).
