Hello,
Gnome-terminal is crashing on remote X sessions with the following message :
Xlib: extension "RENDER" missing on display "localhost:10.0".
The program 'gnome-terminal' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
(Details: serial 219 error_code 11 request_code 53 minor_code 0)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
I'm using Xwin32 as X server but don't think this is the problem. Can it be a problem cause I'm using NIS ? Other terminals (xterm ect.) are running fine.
my CFLAGS : CFLAGS="-march=pentium4 -O3 -pipe"

Got the same problem last night using the Xmanager X-server on Windows XP. I also have problem starting gnome-terminal from a VNC session. The window appear, the whole session freeze for a while and the window close... I have to use xterm instead..
I don't know if it's related but one time it even froze the whole machine... it was hard to diagnose the problem because i was at work and my girlfriend simply rebooted the machine because X wasn't working. I'm sure it happened after starting gnome-terminal but i really don't know if its the problem. |

It seems to be a problem with the Xwin32 X server. Running it from another Linux system works. I think it has to do with the missing RENDER in the X server ?
Still I think it's a bug in gnome-terminal, I'll report it to Gnome.
Jeroen
btw. I also tried different CFLAGS : CFLAGS="-march=pentium3 -O2" |

I had the problem of gnome-terminal crashing when used over a remote X session. The root problem was in the Xft libraries, and was has been resolved in the recent release of Xfree which brings Xft into the core X server build.
You might want to have a look at Gentoo bug 15844:
