Having an interesting display bug here.
I am in the process of re-installing my desktop. Due to hardware swap (read one of my hard drives died, so I had to transfer data off of it before it completly died, to avoid having to do a full backup restore using a sligtly out-dated backups) I had to re-install windows on a different drive and do the same with my linux. Considering I was having weird issues with the linux in question (totaly refused to install gnome, KDE not starting properly half the time and a few other strange bugs arrising from using too much beta software), I decided to do a fresh install.
Right now, I am in the process of configuring X, with KDE emerging on the side.
When I start X, everything is fine. When I exit to terminal, the display gets strangely garbled. I can see text, but it makes litle sence. Black lines apear in the midle of each row. If I switch terminal, say from 1 to 2, the display looks normal, untill the system as to add a new line. (Say I press enter, or the code scrowls in emerge)
Switching terminal fixes it untill a new line gets added. In X, I have it configured to give screen refresh at 70Hz, but it only refreshes at 59Hz.

O yes, I am using genkernel to build the kernel.
I haven't set any video options as a kernel parameter.
The only fix I have found is a reboot, to get the terminal display back to normal. If you have any idea what might be the cause, I would welcome an reply. If I find problem by myself, I will post the solution here.

had something quite similar and it was the framebuffer support
that was all wrong.
Did you have a kernel with which you saw the display correctly
when you exited ? Like an older or original kernel that's known to work ?
If so there might be a way to recuperate the old kernel config and
get this up and running without too many pains

Just as a sidenote: When posting huge config files such as xorg.conf you really might want to remove all comments prior to posting it. If you look at your post, it's so long with actual much less information.
Only a matter of reading comfort; do not take this personal!

This is a fresh install. I didn't have the issue before, but I'm not sure what version of the kernel I was using. I'll try to compile it without frame buffer. Hopefully, that fixes it.
As for x.org, my bad. You're right, makes it hard to read. Thanks for the tip

Update on this issue.
re-compiling the kernel withoug frame buffer worked and is the solution I am going to keep for now. I think, however, I've found out why, on this specific install, it caused me problems.
When I ran genkernel, I checked out the menu config.

I had to do this because the default genkernel compile had not included the drivers for my network card. I had also taken the time to check all the other options and, in frame buffer, I noticed that the ATI frame buffer driver wasn't selected. I have an all in wonder radeon, so I selected it.
I tried compiling the kernel without this driver but with frame buffer and this also cleared away the bug. My impression is that the ATI frame buffer driver as an issue with the xorg driver. Once both have been loaded, it caused the corruption of the display. (This is just a guess based on what I have experienced, I haven't looked at the driver's code)
