I hate doing this (making my first post on a forum a question) but I'm stuck. I'm at the step where I have to chroot into the system. I type chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash and then it says is "illegal instruction". I checked both guides (handbook and the one on the forums here) and still no good. Anyone got any imput? Thanks a ton! If I have any more questions, I'll post the here. |

It means the stage tarball you chose is the wrong one for your CPU.
You can use this command to find out what type of CPU you have.
Code: | # cat /proc/cpuinfo |

I think I know what I did wrong now. Will the Athlon XP tarball work on an old K6-2 (socket 7) cpu?? What tarball should I use and where can I get it?? Thanks for your help so far. |

No. The stage tarball must be equal or lower than your CPU's capabilities.
I think the only one available for K6-2 CPUs is the x86 tarball. |

You mean like the stage3 on this website/mirror?
http://mirrors.acm.cs.rpi.edu/gentoo/releases/x86/2005.1/stages/x86/
The stage3 on that page would be the one I have to use? Is it already on the universal disc (the big 670mb iso)? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm completely new to this. |

Yes, that is the correct stage tarball. The universal CD should have that file, so you don't need to download it. |

Alright, I few questions before I go fiddle with it:
Does MAKEOPTS go in with the make.conf file? What about the USE extension things? Like, do I have to put that under the MAKEOPTS?? And what would I put for march? Should I just use what they put there by default?
Example:
CFLAGS="-march=? -pipe -O2"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
Makeopts="-j2"
USE="-gnu -gnome 3dnow kde dvdr dvd cdr jpeg gif acpi"
Would that be how it goes (basically)?
I really appreciate all the help. |

For the K6-2 cpu, can I use "-march=k6-2 -O2 -pipe" for the CFLAGS. I also switched to the 2005.1 installer. |
