I was not sure what forum to put this in, so if this is the wrong place for this type of problem, please tell me.

I recently went to upgrade mplayer to the newest version 0.90_pre4. I first emerged it, then i ran clean to pull out the old version. Unfortunately THEN i tried to run the program. The program runs sluggishly, and when i go to open a file to play, such as an mpg or avi, it loads the file from the chooser but when i select play, it says "file cannot be found" and has a mutalated string for the name of the file that cannot be found.

I went to irc, and another gentleman said he had the same problem. Anyone know if this is a bad version on portage, or what is up with it?

Same problem here (not the sluggish part (well not while playing movies, but time display is a bit sluggish), but the open file part in gui), would have never know if you hadn't said it, I never use the gui, using mplayer from console does the trick for me.

Just did a rebuild, but this didn't change it, well will get fixed in time,....... Cya lX

So I'm not alone.

I have discovered that renaming the file extension to some other media format often works. If I have an .mpg that doesn't work I rename it to .avi (or vice versa) and it often works, but not always.

I have no idea what's causing it. It works great once it manages to load the file though, no sluggishness here.

Had the same problem, what I did is unmerge mplayer .90_pre4 and re-emerged the older .60 version which works fine for me.

su to root

$ cd /usr/portage/media-video/mplayer

$ emerge -C mplayer (this is to remove the newer version if you have not done so already)

$ emerge mplayer-0.60-r6.ebuild

This is assuming that you have that ebuild, I'm not sure how to recover it if it's not there since it might not be part of the portage tree anymore.
