Huh? There are no fixed runlevels in Gentoo. The init system is based on runscripts that you can add or delete via rc-update. What seems to be the problem? |

i changed inittab default to be 3 (this apparently only for redhat-compatible system), then telinit 3, and when booting up, it says INIT: entering runlevel: 3, but then gnome still loads up. _________________

try this:
Code: | rc-update del xdm default |
that should keep gnome from starting and leave you at a console login.

Hands off /etc/inittab! You really should read some documentation before you go poking around like that.
Code: | rc-update delete gdm default | will most likely take care of your problem. Post the output of Code: | ls /etc/runlevels/default | if it doesn't. |
