I have a few questions about Gentoo Linux and Linux in common:
I use Gnome 2.2 with sawfish on a Athlon 850 with 512Mb.
I wonder if I su in a terminal and leave it open, is my system just as vulnerable as when I login as root?
I don't like Nautilus so much. Is there an alternative which uses less memory and is faster?
are there any email-apps like Evolution that do work on Gnome 2.2?
I mean with Palm sync and calendar and so on.
My DVD playback is jumpy in ogle and mplayer (no GUI). I turned on DMA by putting "hdparm..." in local.start, but that doesn't seem to work.
Sorry if I'm asking to many questions at once, but I didn't find an answere to any of them. _________________ It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt. (Mark Twain) |

If someone has physical access to your computer than it can be a bad thing.
The main idea of not logging in as root is that you are not running programs as root. By not running programs as root you minimize the area that a malicous program can get to (only your files in your home directory can get screwed up, your system is relativly safe).
Leaving root logged in even if you aren't running programs with it is generally a bad thing, as it leaves another window opened up for a possible attack.
Having root logged in won't really hurt anything per se, but the less root is logged in the safer things are. _________________ Shoot Pixels Not People

Oh, btw... What is Nautilus? Is it a web broswer?
There are tons of web browsers available...
Opera, Phoenix, or even Links are good choices. _________________ Shoot Pixels Not People

Thanks, that is quite clear about the root.
Nautilus is Gnome 2.2 standard file manager. You can use it to draw your desktop and to browse your dirs. It is very slow on my computer. _________________ It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt. (Mark Twain) |

the filemanager gentoo (ooh, what a nice name:=) is quite nice, although it is not a graphical filemanager, but more like midnight commander, you can configure it more than anything else I have found. |
