hi, im trying to install gentoo in a notebook i recently bought. This is also my first time trying to install gentoo...

when the cd boots and i run ifconfig, it finds eth0, so i figure that it recognices my network card. But when i try to ping a host (ping -c 3 www.google.com). i get an unknown host message, i have a Lan network in my house, and all the others computers have network access, i have also tryed changing the network cables and everything, but i keep getting the same message.

And, the first time i booted the cd, it found the network and ping was working fine, but at that time i was really tired and turned off the notebook, the next day i started getting the same unknown host error... Anyone knows what could be wrong, or how to solve this. i already tryed using net-setup, but its still the same...

the notebooks specs are: hp zv 6130us, AMD64 3200+, 512 RAM, 128 Ati video card...

try to ping other computers in your network
if they reply, it's IMHO most likely the problem with DNS server
and if they don't problem with card configuration

how about
Code:

or
Code:

/etc/init.d/net.eth0 start
if it exists

Are you sure that you have a vaild IP address and subnet mask for your internal network that all your computers are on?
Also is your gateway set to the correct IP?

The "unknown host" error is usually a DNS issue. Do you have the right DNS IPs from your ISP.
And have you tried pinging them to see if they work.

Another thing you could try to see if it's a DNS issue is:
ping -c 3 72.14.203.99 that is one of google's IP addresses, if you can ping it by it's IP then it is a DNS issue

if he says so then i suppose he has his ethernet card installed properly in his kernel, especially that it is bootcd :)
