unmerge the old version first. Pehaps quickpkg first so you can restore the binaries if you want.

I'm a bit tired here, so this is probably rubbish - but shouldn't you emerge the new version of KDE first, then remove the old split stuff ? So that portage can update what's already there and you haven't got to guess what you had installed.

Edit added, from the split ebuilds guide :

Code:

 for x in `ls /usr/portage/kde-base`; do
 if [ "$x" != "CVS" ]; then
 echo -n "=kde-base/$x-3.4* "
 fi
 done |xargs emerge -Cp

Will get all of the old 3.4 split packages

I used:

Code:
emerge -Cva `equery list|grep kde|grep 3.4`

to unmerge all KDE 3.4 stuff.

If you don't have space for both versions, and you're not using ~x86 for all your system, I'd recommend you to wait till 3.5 is stabilized. KDE 3.4.3 is pretty stable. However, I've found some weird crashes on Konqueror and Kontact on 3.5 (I'm fully ~x86).
