PostPosted: Fri Dec 02, 2005 3:06 pm    Post subject: Ext. HDD has block device but not external DVD/CDR(Solved) Reply with quote

I've got a weird problem with udev.

When I attach my external hdd, a block device gets created, but when add my extern DVD/CDR combo drive, it's gets detected but no block device is created.

I have 2 sata drives with block device sda and sdb assigned to them, while my external drive gets sdc. But when I attach the DVD/CDR drive (with the external drive still connected) there is no /dev/hdd (oops sorry, this should have been /dev/sr0 not /dev/hdd) block device created. My Udev version 070-r1.

Please help.

heres part of my dmesg. I can see that the DVD/CDR drive gets detected but never assigned any block device.

Do you have support for SCSI CD-ROMs in the kernel ? And if it's modular, is the module loaded (I think it's called "sd-mod") ?

thanks widan, without your reply, I would not have checked my kernel config. I got caught with the "Hey, external hdd is working so the external cdrom has to work as well" mindset.
Thanks again. Marking as solved.
