I'm having problems since I upgraded to kde 3.5. From what I can tell it's an artsd problem. Anyway, I was talking to a friend who suggested I buy a sound card that uses mixing to resolve the issue. The thing is I have onboard sound and I can't disable it in my bios. But if I recompiled my kernel and took out support for my onboard card and enabled support for my new card should that work? |

You seem to be describing a software error (new version of artsd/KDE does not work anymore, but old version worked). And you want to solve it by buying new hardware? If there's a bug in the software, I'd ask for this bug to be fixed, rather than spending money on hardware that might be affected by the bug as well. So in other words, if you were happy with your onboard sound so far, you should look for a software solution (updates, patches, talk to developers to get a patch, etc.), and not buy something you don't even know if it will help.
That aside, it should be no problem using a sound card in addition to onboard sound card. I've got an onboard sound card as well (although disabled for various reasons) as well as two PCI sound cards, one for everyday use, the other for recording purposes. It's a little more complicated to set up, but once you figured it out, it works like a charm. |

It will be nice of u mention ur sound card make and what problem ur facing. it will help other users who are planning to upgrade KDE. I hope u followd gentoo alsa-guide for solving the problem. My PS: If u are not happy with ur onboard sound then and then u should go for new hardware. _________________ AMD Athlon 64 processor 3000+ 939 pins

No, I'm happy with my sound. I have an i8x0 card and it's worked just fine. I did try another thread about the problem and tried the few solutions that were offered but they didn't work. Any suggestions as to how to find the answer to the problem since it is software related? |
