Ciao a tutti.
Ho da poco installato Gentoo su un portatile (Ibm T21). Dopo aver installato grub, al successivo riavvio compaiono i primi messaggi di grub ma poi non vedo la lista dei S.O. avviabili.
Comunque se scelgo "al buio" la voce desiderata, tutto va alla perfezione, il solo problema penso sia di visualizzazione.
Sapete aiutarmi please?

ciao tanto per capire compare immagine splash (/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz) ? non si vedono le scritte ma immagine si'?
cosa vedi?
controlla che tale file esista e sia leggibile
Potrebbe poi essere problema colori

Non si vede niente!
Compare la scritta grubloader 1.5 (spero di non errare la versione, vado a memoria) poi sparisce e non si vede più nulla, schermo nero.
Non compare nemmeno schermata splash

nn so se sia obbligatorio, ma io in grub.conf ho queste righe all'inizio:

timeout 30
splashimage=(hd0,4)/grub/splash.xpm.gz |
te dovresti avere (hd0,1) probabilmente al posto di (hd0,4)

Sì, quelle righe le ho anche io, avevo scordato di postarle. Comunque tutto funziona, anche il timeout che fa avviare Gentoo dopo 10 secondi, l'unico difetto è che non si vede cosa seleziono. |

non noto nel tuo grub la riga
splashimage=(hd0,x)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz
dove x stà per 1 nel tuo caso se non sbaglio.

come dicevo sopra, ma mi sono spiegato male, non e' obbligatorio avere splashimage.Si puo' commentare ma a questo punto almeno bisogna avere i colori giusti per vedere le entries senza immagine di sfondo

AIo ho un Acer con scheda video Intel ... ho avuto problemi simili passando dal kernel 2.6.12-r6 ai 2.6.14-r2.
1 - All'inizio) Partiva linux fino alla shell (in 640x480) ... ma al caricamento di Xorg e di Gnome si Piantava
2 - Qualche passo avanti) Stessa cosa ma in 1024x768 e col pinguino al caricamento del kernel
3 - Avvilito) Ho caricato nel kernel nuovo il .conf del vecchio kernel ... e parte tutto ... ma pieno di scritte "Deprecated" ... ma uscendo da Xorg la metà sinistra del mio monitor ... è buia ... ma funzionante dato che mi fa lanciare il reboot.
4 - Affranto) Quando ho tentato di mettere un pò a posto il kernel ricompilano queo nuovo con qlc modifica ... sono ripartito dal punto 1 ... ma avendo oramai esaurito il mio MANA ... ho deciso di tenermi il 2.6.12.
Non so se sia un problema dellultimo kernel |

Giustissimo! 
Prova a rieseguire l'installazione del grub...Cioè...non nel senso di ri-emergere il pacchetto, ma di reinstallarlo nel MBR

(oppure c'è grub-install, ma non l'ho mai usato)...
Magari si è corrotto qualcosa...
Altrimenti mi viene da pensare che grub non possa accedere o usare l'hardware video...Ma non si è mai sentita questa cosa...
PS: Ovviamente quelli sopra sono i MIEI parametri... Ricordati di cambiarli, eh?

come si diceva prima, si può fare a meno... sarebbe cmq da controllare e provare ad impostare a mano foreground e background color del menu di grub
