Ok so I have never installed mysql on a gentoo box before. I got it installed tho but I can't use it. I can use 'mysql -u root --password' and get in like that but no other program can get in. mysqladmin gets a cant connect with root@localhost and phpmyadmin just says wrong password.

did you run emerge --config =mysql-$your_mysql_version after the installation?
