I just installed gentoo I'm my new Acer Travelmate 8100. Everything seems ok whenever I boot the machine, except the booting hangs whenever it says "Ip tables by blah blah" for about 10 seconds. I think that is unusual because one of my slower desktops can boot way faster. After doing my usual startx thing after logging in, it takes about 15-20 seconds for fluxbox to start up. Well, for a little while I just accepted it because I couldn't find out why it was doing that. But then I emerged Eterm and I started typing. Ok, my text is lagging about 2-3 seconds behind my typing. This is really aggrivating. I opened up xterm (which doesn't have the problem) and ran top. I just sat there and watched it for a good 10 minutes. It seems the cpu jumps from 0% to 75% to 100% and back down to 0% every couple of minutes for no apparent reason. The list of processes running doesn't show anything using that much of the cpu (just idle it's got a few things at like .3%). I don't know what causes this or how to fix it as well as the boot problem. So please, any suggestions and hints. (I like to figure things out before the answer is given to me.)

Thanks in advance.

Btw, sorry if some of this doesn't make sense. I've been awake playing with this stuff for way too long.

what kernel/glibc/gcc are you running? also, did you emerge anything out of the "norm"? seems like maybe some firewall not confiured and timing out? to me it seems like some networking that is timing out.

2.6.14 gentoo sources, gcc is 3.4.4 (I just updated the system, but the gcc 3.3* did the same), By emerge out of the norm, I'm assuming you mean unstable packages? If so, I got the unstable ati package, 8.10.19 iI believe. The stable ati drivers do not support my card. Why would a networking problem cause my system to slow down?

Thanks for the quick reply.

Hello sykonet,

you're having the same problem as i, and i also have a acer, but an aspire 1692 DDR2,

please see the following thread and see if your simptoms are the same as mine
I've run into this problem when (i think) i did a bios upgrade - did you performe any bios upgrade ???

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-403020.html

when i compile the kernel manually, i get your same problem during the boot, it seems to hang when starting or doing something with iptables or network..
that is not new to me.... 8O
