Just wondering if you guys could recommend any media players or what you are using right now. Comments on why you recommend it or why you use it would help too.
I'm looking for something light, nothing too fancy and it can play most file formats.
Thanks! |

For video I reccomend: mplayer (mplayer-bin if you're on a 64-bit system like me, for codec compatability). Will play any format I have come across. I use it with the option -fs to automatically open in fullscreen mode and use the keyboard to control it. Simple to use, plays everything I want.
For audio: beep-media-player. If you're coming from windows this will feel very familiar as it is a winamp clone. In fact it can use classic winamp skins! Much like xmms from which it was forked, but it uses gtk2 instead of gtk which makes the menus and the fonts in the display look MUCH nicer. Plays all formats I've come across (with plugins for some) and has a nice visualization plugin. Attractive (especially with my Charlize Theron skin ), easy to use, very functional. |

i second that. mplayer and VLC are a perfect team for watching any video file, and for audio i use audacious, a beep-media-player 'fork' (which can handle old input plugins like musepack from bmp)

also playing around with beep-media-player phase3, that one will have lots of interesting features

I recommend MPlayer as the guys did. My favourite way to launch it is actualy gmplayer -- the same, but with nice GUI. I don't remember whether it requires some USE flag or not. |

xine-lib + kaffeine = best video experience (IMO). |

It's a beep-media-player fork that was started shortly after the announcement that all the BMP devs are abandoning BMP to work on BMPx. (which isn't too good.)
I found out about audacious a few days ago and it's great. Now I'm having trouble deciding whether to use audacious or ncmpc.
As for movies, definately go with mplayer.

Cool, I'll check it out. Does audacious support classic winamp skins like xmms/bmp? Does it support a libvisual plugin or work with the current xmms or bmp one? |

As for the visual plug in, I don't know. I'm guessing anything that currently works with bmp would most likely work with audacious since it's a brand new fork and not much has been changed yet. (except a few bug fixes and features added.) _________________ meow. |
