I just installed gentoo on my Dell 700m. I have most things I want working, but I'm having trouble with the integrated wireless. It's an Intel 2200BG wireless adaptor. I have already downloaded the ipw2200 firmware and driver, and can iwconfig eth1. However, I cannot use eth1 to connect to anything, and when I attempted to set net.eth1 to runlevel default using rc-update add net.eth1 default, i get an error, since the script net.eth1 does not exist. Can anyone help me out here, I'm really stuck as to where I should go from here.

Have you looked into making udev rules so there is no confusion with device naming?

Or you can just "ln -s /etc/init.d/net.lo /etc/init.d/net.eth1" but I found that to be less than desirable... but it really does depend on your laptop and how you have it configured.

Got net.eth1 up and running, was able to use the wireless on my college network. Took it home, can't get it to play nice with the network at home. Does anyone have an example /etc/conf.d/wireless file handy for multiple networks I could look at to try and work out the kinks?

This is frustrating me to the point of insanity. After getting my wireless to run on my college network, I brough it home. I have defined the essid and WEP key for the network in my /etc/conf.d/wireless file. I cannot connect to the network, and furthermore, I cannot connect to any networks in my neighborhood, including all of the unsecured ones. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? I am literally at my wit's end over here, I have exhausted every logical configuration I can come up with ...

Ok, so now this is just strange ...

I got the wireless running on my home network, but in order to do so, I had to comment out the entries regarding the wireless network at my college. How do you configure a wireless device to accpet either one network or another? Can anyone provide me with a brief /etc/conf.d/wireless example of this implementation or recommend some tips?

I'm actually doing something similar. According to what I read on associating a wireless card with different AP's, you can setup a "preferred ap" list and input each AP's associated stuff like WEP key, open/shared authentication....

I added a few comments in to help explain what and why.

EDIT: If you don;t know the MAC address of the access point you are trying to connect to, take a look at a program called kismet, it will sniff the air and tell you what all is out there, and also AP MAC addresses.

Quote:

# Setup eth0 to let other people connect to the internet through it, internet connection sharing
# this is my WIRED connection, eth0
# specify the IP address, netmask and broadcast
config_eth0=( "192.168.5.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.5.255" )

# Now for wireless, setup eth1 to use DHCP
# iface_eth1="dhcp"
config_eth1=( "dhcp" )

# Defines the referred access points in order of preference
# will try to connect to network4, if it can;t tries network 3 and so on
# this is probably what you want to define without a doubt.
preferred_aps_eth1=( "network4" "network1" "network3" "network3")

# I only uncomment these two lines if I am going to use a static IP in the wireless network
# ....and of course, then I also comment the above dhcp setting.
config_eth1=( "192.168.0.230 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255" )
routes_eth1=( "default via 192.168.0.1" )

# If you want to, specify the channel. From what I've seen, linux is smart enough to
# change to the correct channel on its own, but if not, specify it.
# channel_eth1="6"

# network1
# specify by
#mac_key_<AP's MAC address>="<WEP key, 64, 128-bit....> enc <open or shared>"
# this one uses open authentication and a 64-bit WEP key
# make sure DHCP is used
mac_key_020C314254B2="51:22:A3:15:93 enc open"

# network2
# shared authentication
mac_key_00234BA21E44="11:22:33:44:44 enc shared"

# network3
# does not require any WEP key
# using a static IP address
# also I'm specifying the router
# comment out DHCP above
mac_config_000F7795D7AF=( "192.168.2.151 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.2.255
mac_routes_000F7795D7AF=( "default via 192.168.2.1" )

# network4
# 128-bit WEP key, open authentication, DHCP explicitly set, DNS server explicitly set
mac_key_000C52A16823="EFD77AEDBE17086940461CDD58 enc open"
mac_config_000C52A16823=( "dhcp" )
#mac_dns_servers_000C52A16823=( "65.24.7.3" )

Hope that helps some,
Paul

Code:
preferred_aps_wifi=( "AP1" "AP2")
key_AP1=( "oiewkfdkafiafoiajdifja" )
config_AP1=( "192.168.4.20 brd 192.168.4.255 promisc" )
routes_AP1=( "default via 192.168.4.254" )

config_wifi=( "dhcp" )
dhtpcd_wifi=( "-t 5" )

You can configure your network interface per AP.. Just follow the above example.
