OK here's the rundown
00:0e.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8169 Gigabit Ethernet (rev 10)
linux-2.6.14-gentoo-r2
Athlon XP 2000+
Asus A7V266-E
This computer is primarily being used as a file server. I was copying some large files off the server via samba and all of the sudden it stops, the computer becomes unresponsive, and I'm forced to reset it. Upon reset I'm greeted with a filesystem error. I boot to the lifecd, try to fix it, it gets fixed partially. I grab the stuff I need of it and go for a reinstall. At the point I still have no idea what the problem was, I thought maybe a fluke. Well it happened again. So I'm starting to think of what it could be. I had the driver loaded directly into the kernel, not as a module. I decided to build it in as a module the second time around, and had a monitor hooked up to it so I could see what was going on. Again I started copying files, and I get an actual error this time. I couldn't copy it because the computer was now unresponsive. I did see the module name for the network adapter in the error though. I passed after the error and it came back "Segmentation fault".
I tried logging in under a different console and I was able to enter a username but then nothing happened.
I switched nics to an Intel 10/100 and now all is well.
I found someone using the realtek 8169 with a similar problem, but the thread had no conclusion, and this was over a year ago.
Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this?
Thanks,
Matt |

don't you think I would see this problem with both NIC's and not just one? Plus I've used this memory in 3 other computers and never had a problem.

Thanks for the reply,
