hey where do i set the ps1 string to change the bash prompt since both .bashrc and .bash_promt exist in my home directory |

.bashrc is read when bash is started in interactive mode and .bash_login is read when bash is the login shell. I also have a .bash_profile file (automatically created at some point in time) that tells bash where to find the interactive login script (.bashrc by default).
Generally the accepted way to do this is to set PS1, PATH, etc in your .bashrc and edit your .bash_login to contain "source ~/.bashrc"
