every time i try to stop or restart snort...

/etc/init.d/snort stop

i end up with a 'defunct' snort process.

snort 31322 1 1 17:57 ? 00:00:02 /usr/bin/snort -D -u snort -i eth0 -c /etc/snort/snort.conf
snort 31324 31322 0 17:57 ? 00:00:00 [snort] <defunct>

at this point, i cant start snort again until i get rid of the defunct process. does anyone know why this keeps happening to me? the same thing happens with amavisd, but im less concerned with that. i need to restart snort after oinkmaster updates my rules (so that snort will use the new rules), but i cant script this very easily because of the above problem. thanks in advance.
