I've been having mixed results with the Philips DVP642/37 (firmware 1109)
Works:
30-days-min-wage.avi: RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 512 x 384, 29.97 fps, video: XviD, audio: MPEG-1 Layer 3 (stereo, 48000 Hz)
SouthernSun.mpg: MPEG sequence, v2, program multiplex, 480x576, 25 fps, 2520 kbps, audio track: 44100 Hz, 16 bit, 2 channel, 224 kbps
Whole-Lotta-Love.avi: RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 500 x 336, 25.00 fps, video: DivX 5, audio: MPEG-1 Layer 3 (stereo, 48000 Hz)
No Audio:
FF9-Garbage-Parade.avi: RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 320 x 224, ~15 fps, video: DivX 3 Low-Motion, audio: uncompressed PCM (mono, 22050 Hz)
Docs say it can play PCM audio but only 16, 20, 24 bits and only 44.1, 48 and 96 kHz so 22 kHz failed I guess.
Completely fails (LED flashes "OOPS"):
Interpol.avi: RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 704 x 400, 25.00 fps, video: XviD, 190 kbps, audio: MPEG-1 Layer 3 (stereo, 44100 Hz)
Was it the picture size? The docs are incomplete about DIVX/XVID picture sizes.
21_Grams.avi: RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 480 x 360, 29.97 fps, video: DivX 3 Low-Motion, 95 kbps, audio: MPEG-1 Layer 3 (stereo, 44100 Hz)
Dreaming.mpg: MPEG sequence, v1, system multiplex, 352x288, 25 fps, 1150 kbps, 44100 Hz, 16 bit, 2 channel, 256 kbps
I should just shove a computer in the entertainment center. If I wanted to transcode I would have gone with an ordinary DVD. Even worse is playing guessing games with this thing about what it will play since there's no detailed error messages.
It does play DVD/VCD/SVCD OK.
Anybody else have any comments about this unit? Any scripts to transcode or other experiences? Thanks. |

i have had this dvd player for about 2 years and love it. be thankful that you can throw many media types at it successfully. it will take xvid, divx, etc as you know with ease for the most part.
what i use is avidemux2 to get files into the format needed to run on the system if they will not work natively. you can use transcode or mencode or anything you are more familiar with of course. the other great thing about this player is it can handle Dual-Layer discs, and I recently bought the BenQ 640 which has been making some great burns for me and work on the DVP642 flawlessly. |

Actually I just installed any2vob
http://www.ebuildexchange.org/eshow.php?id=151
and I'm loving it. My biggest problem with recoding to DVD was audio-visual sync. any2vob just spit out a perfect version of a file I couldn't convert before. |
