The vmail user will not be able to bind to the 143 port. You could setup an iptables redirect to a hgher port - or just get users to connect to another port number (1430 - for example).

You'll also need to change the owner of the: /etc/courier-imap/imapd & /etc/courier-imap/imapd-ssl files to vmail. Add a new directory with vmail user as the owner in /var/run. (/var/run/courier-imapd for example). Edit these files and change the PIDFILE parameter to this new directory (the vmail user does not have permission to write to /var/run and this is a good and secure method to change this). You'll need to edit the /etc/init.d/courier-imapd and /etc/init.d/courier-imapd-ssl scripts and change the start() functions. Find the line with start-stop-daemon and add the option "--chuid vmail" (without quotes).
