hi,
I'm new,
I'm following the handbook step by step. I got as far as "Alternative: Using a Stage from the Installation CD"
at the command:

tar xvjpf /mnt/cdrom/stages/stage3-i686-2005.1.tar.bz2

It ran a process trying to install countless files, from my Gentoo installation CD, all of which where not found. I thought that I might be in the wrong mounting directory but everything checked out. I connented the internet up as I read that a Stage3 install needed an internet connection. This time all the files where found and the started to install.
The install stopped halfway through with a message saying disk space was full. The HD is 6Gigs And I read a Gentoo install is only 1.5Gigs Wha??

I desided to delete all my partitions and try re-partitoning and rebooting.

fdisk /dev/hda1

Device contains neither a valid Dos partition table...
Warning: Invalid flag 0x0000 of partition table 4 will be corrected by w(rite)

I used the w(rite) command

The partition table have been altered!
WARNING: Re-reading the partition table failed with error 22: Invalid Argument.
The kernel still uses the old table.
The new table will be used at the next reboot.
Syncing disks.

I used the p(rint) command

Disk /dev/hda1 : 57MB
No partitions

please help
thanks, Bronson

It's fdisk /dev/hda, not /dev/hda1. hda1 is the first partition on hda, which is the physical disk. So you're trying to partition a partition.
