|

Hi!
I have been a happy Ubuntu user for a couples of month, but I decided to try Gentoo because I wanted to try someting new.
The problem is that my system freezes completely, the mouse won't move, keyboard won't work and all music stops playing and I can not reach it with SSH.
I have looked around a bit here in the forums and I have seen that many people have a problem which is very similar to mine, but for them it is only X freezing.
I know that these kinds of things can happen if your computer gets to hot, but I don't think that is the fact in this case because my system is well cooled and my CPU temperature is never higher then 45 C.
Sometimes it can ran for 24 hours, and sometimes it freezes after 1 hour.
Earlier when I used Windows and Ubuntu my computer ran great, so I wonder if I compiled the kernel wrong or something because I'm kinda new to this.
Thanks // Anders |

Welcome to Gentoo
in order to help we'd really need a bit more info .
Are these " freezes " you experience happening when you do a
specific task ? Are you always logged in the graphical environment
when they happen ? What's the hardware you are using ?
If you can post more information on the hardware / software environment
that would certainly help us .

you really got to give us some more information. This way, it could be everything and nothing.
For example, it could be you enabled "kernel premption" in your kernel, which is known for getting some boards to lock hard (including mine )
But, as i said...info! |

okay, here is some info:
Hardware:
ASUS P4P800-E deluxe
Ati Radeon 9200
Intel Pentium 4 3GHz
2x256 mb ram
3x Maxtor 200 GB Sata
I am using the 2.6.14-r2 kernel and xorg 6.8.2-r6
I used genkernel when i compiled my kernel.
The freezes doesn't come when I do a specific task, it just comes, sometimes even at night while idling.
I haven't tried without X yet so i can't tell you if that is the problem.
Thanks for trying to help |

hi,
maybe you could look into the kernel-issue, i don't know if genkernel includes preemption or not.
Are you using xcompmgr and transset? (for shadows and transparent windows)
If yes, stop it, they are both not really stable and can cause lockups.
And maybe you could install and run memtest86, just to exclude the possibility of broken Ram. |
