Well, i had just recently upgraded my kernel to 2.6.14-r4, thne I did a genkernel --menuconfig all to enable my sound driver , which in turn recompiled my kernel. Now, whenever I boot up gentoo, I get a "/dev/hda3 is a valid root device" error message, but I havent changed anything in my grub or anything for that matter, and it was working fine before. How do I get around this?
EDIT: I had upgraded my kernel the day before and it worked fine, its now that I recompiled my kernel using the "genkernel --menuconfig all" that I am expeiriencing problems _________________ Registered Linux User #387568

Ok, first of all realize that I configure my kernel with menuconfig, second of all realize that I use Lilo. With all of that said whenever I update (or upgrade) my kernel and recompile it, I have to re-run a script to have lilo re-read my boot setup. Even if the filename for my kernel stays the same, I have to do this otherwise I get errors. This may not have anything to do with your issue, but it's my 2 cents worth. |

Which version of udev are you running? Downgrading to stable 070-r1 could solve the problem, unless it's not yet clear where the problem really is. _________________ Adopt an unanswered post

I dont know what udev version I am running and the thing is that I cant get into my gentoo environment. I am running on my dual botted windows right now. Although it allows for a shell instead of a different boot device, the shell doesnt allow me to use nano or to emerge anything let alone explore my files. _________________ Registered Linux User #387568

You should boot with installation CD (or a live CD like Knoppix) and chroot. _________________ Adopt an unanswered post

Slight problem with that, my LiveCD is not working. So basically, I can only use my broken system and windows to fix my problem. _________________ Registered Linux User #387568

You may burn a Knoppix Live CD with Windows and try to boot it. _________________ Adopt an unanswered post

No CD burner on this machine, or any other one in the house. Is it possible to chroot from a FC3 installation CD? I have one lying around so if I can get into the environment from there, that would help.
EDIT: Well, I was able to solve my problem by doing a thurough check of my CD collection and salvaging a 2004.3 Live CD, which I used to chroot into my environment. It turns out I ad not correctly compiled my kernel. I had used genkernel --menuconfig all, but since I am using a 2.4 kernel, I should have done genkernel --udev all. _________________ Registered Linux User #387568
