Posted: Mon Dec 12, 2005 9:40 pm Post subject: Wierd Grub issue {SOLVED} |
|
|
I just completed an install on an old pc I had laying around as a test machine. It is an AMD-XP processor on an Asus a7v266-E motherboard (makes no difference). Anyhow, Grub seemed to install fine on hd(0,0). My partition layout is as follows:
/dev/hda1 boot
/dev/hda2 swap
/dev/hda3 root
/dev/hda4 non formatted - for future use
When I rebooted for the first time all I see is a Black screen with the word GRUB repeated all over the screen. i double checked my Grub conf and it is an exact match to the handbook (with the exception of the kernel). Also grub seemed to install fine and I installed using the stable x86 tree.
I have never seen this issue before, and I am stumped...
Thanks,
Zach

zach9824,
Grub is not installed properly. It cant find grub stage 1.5, which suggests its looking on the floppy drive.
Install grub manually with the -no-floppy option if that helps. _________________ Regards,

Do you have splashimage specified in grub.conf? If so, try commenting it out so that grub uses text mode and see if it helps any. |

I tried manually installing without luck. Also I double checked the grub.conf file and #commented the splash image line. I also checked the device.map file located in /boot/grub and it appears as follows:
(fd0) /dev/fd0
(hd0) /dev/hda
I even went as far to use a windows XP disk to wipe the MBR and then reinstalled the entire /dev/hda1 and MBR partitions and reinstalled the kernel, grub etc...
Lastly I double checked that the System Bios MBR virus protection is and was turned off.
Looking at the screen it appears that the bottom is flashing GRUB GRUB, like something is moving. I dont have a floppy installed and this should not matter since it installed without issue on other machines I have in the past.
Any additional suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I feel stupid now. I had to change the IDE detection from Auto to User Defined in the System Bios. Back to Basics!!
Thanks for your help.
