Apache custom directory index

I once saw someone had a good guide on how to customize the apache directory index with css. The guide didn't seem too complicated and I don't think it required recompiling apache as some people say. Unfortunately I lost the link, and google doesn't seem to help find any good information. Does anyone know how this can be done? I already use a php index script to customize the look, but I would like to try something simpler and more reliable.

Thanks, that looks like what I needed. The link I had before was a whole tutorial, but at least now I know what to look for.
