No no... I'm not trying to come up with a new linux Christmas Carol
I'm not very good at this, and I've somehow gone from a perfect working system, to rubbish in 8 hours.
It all started when I went in to redo my Kernel so that I could enable my sound. I don't know what happened. I thought that when I went in to the make menuconfig, that I was just taking away and adding new things... not starting over. I guess I messed something up somewhere (not that I'm suprised), and now I cannot get back into my GUI.
When I made my first Kernel, I only had to change maybe 5-8 things, and it worked perfectly (or better than this). Now, I cannot get my nvidia drivers to install or anything. Right now, I'm just trying to get back to something I'm comfortable with, and it's proving to be a little much for me.
So, my question is, when you first install Gentoo, that first Kernel that you make menuconfig, is there any way to get back to those initial settings? I don't know where the stuff in this new Kernel came from, but I sure as heck didn't make it.
I guessing not, but I just thought that I would ask... |

Settings are in /usr/src/linux/.config Keep in mind, that /usr/src/linux is a symlink. If you changed that symlink to point to new kernel sources, then you have the "old" .config, but it probably won't work with the new kernel sources. If you haven't changed the symlink, your old settings are gone, and "the stuff in this new Kernel" was already there.
Moved from Installing Gentoo to Kernel & Hardware. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Regarding using the old .config file, assuming you have it, I believe it is acceptable to use a prior version so long as you don't try to use a 2.4x kernel .config with a 2.6x kernel (and vice-versa).
If you have your old .config and not in the boat above, copy the .config into the new kernel tree, swich to that directory and type:
Be sure to do an ls -l /usr/src/ before starting to show that the /usr/src/linux symlink is pointing to the correct kernel tree. _________________ Go away or I will replace you with a very small shell script. |

Are you aware that you have to re-emerge nvidia-kernel after
compiling and installing a new kernel? |
