I have 64bit gentoo running on a dual xeon 3.2ghz machine, with software raid level 1, md compiled into the kernel instead of as a module.

All is fine and dandy, the raid is running, but if I open the case, and unplug a drive, either drive, the kernel panics.

Raidtab:

Code:

# /boot (RAID 1)
raiddev                 /dev/md0
raid-level              1
nr-raid-disks           2
chunk-size              32
persistent-superblock   1
device                  /dev/sda1
raid-disk               0
device                  /dev/sdb1
raid-disk               1

# / (RAID 1)
raiddev                 /dev/md2
raid-level              1
nr-raid-disks           2
chunk-size              32
persistent-superblock   1
device                  /dev/sda3
raid-disk               0
device                  /dev/sdb3
raid-disk               1

# /home (RAID 0)
raiddev                 /dev/md1
raid-level              1
nr-raid-disks           2
chunk-size              32
persistent-superblock   1
device                  /dev/sda2
raid-disk               0
device                  /dev/sdb2
raid-disk               1

fstab:
Code:

# This file is edited by fstab-sync - see 'man fstab-sync' for details
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# noatime turns off atimes for increased performance (atimes normally aren't
# needed; notail increases performance of ReiserFS (at the expense of storage
# efficiency).  It's safe to drop the noatime options if you want and to
# switch between notail / tail freely.
#
# See the manpage fstab(5) for more information.
#

# <fs>                  <mountpoint>    <type>          <opts>          <dump/pass>

# NOTE: If your BOOT partition is ReiserFS, add the notail option to opts.
/dev/md0      /boot     ext3      noatime     1 2
/dev/md2      /         reiserfs       noatime            0 1
/dev/md1     none      swap      sw,pri=0           0 0
/dev/cdroms/cdrom0      /mnt/cdrom      iso9660         noauto,ro       0 0
#/dev/fd0               /mnt/floppy     auto            noauto          0 0

# NOTE: The next line is critical for boot!
proc                    /proc           proc            defaults        0 0

# glibc 2.2 and above expects tmpfs to be mounted at /dev/shm for
# POSIX shared memory (shm_open, shm_unlink).
# (tmpfs is a dynamically expandable/shrinkable ramdisk, and will
#  use almost no memory if not populated with files)
shm                     /dev/shm        tmpfs           nodev,nosuid,noexec     0 0

Why does the kernel panic when the drive (either) is unplugged instead of continuing to run as it should?

Many thanks,
Michael
