I have recently had some problems with random system hangs.
I don't know what is causing the system lock up.
The system "hang" always happens when there is a high cpu load.

I find it odd that some parts of the system still react. I'm abble to ssh into my shell. I can type my username and password.
During the password verification the terminal doesn't react anymore.
The last time when the system locked up , I had a terminal open with top running.
I saw that the processes where still running and reacting on a user request.
But after the initial request nothing happened.
Two other terminals didn't react anymore.
The same with a request for the apache server.
During the lockup nothing is logged. I find that also rather strange.

The problem first occured when I was running freshclam and foldingathome.
I rebooted the server and everything worked fine untill I ran emerge --sync.
Yet another system hang.
Another reboot. I turned off all the services that weren't realy needed.
After 40 mins of uptime I decide to run updatedb.
After a moment there is another system lockup.
It seems that something is eating resources.

I recently installed udev. Now I have a tmpfs of 250mb. Maybe this partition gets full and results in a system hang.

I check every day for rootkits and worms with chkrootkit and rkhunter, so it's very unlikely that soms zombie-proces is taking over my server.

I experienced some troubles with clamscan. It keeps running at 100% cpu and sometimes it seems that the process hangs.
Can't I configure clamscan that it only uses 60% of the cpu?

I had problems and found there was a problem with a certain release of the nvidia drivers. If you're running nvidia-kernel-1.0.7676 you might want to upgrade as there's a new version out.
