|
|
Hi.
The situation is like this.
Hardware:
Compaq Deskpro EN SFF based on Intel BX Chipset.
IDE RAID Controller PCI card based on ITE8212 chipset.
Seagate 160 GB ATA connected to 1st ide channel as master.
No raid configured, hdd connected in IDE mode.
I successfuly booted with Gentoo 2005.1 Minimal Installation CD.
Gentoo sees the drive as /dev/hda.
I could create partitions and make routine gentoo installation without any problems.
I set up grub in mbr area of the disk.
After reboot pc cannot boot from this disk. Even grub does not show up: no system or disk error.
I created boot floppy with grub and tried to boot to this disk form it, the result was:
Code: |
Error 21: Selected disk does not exist
|
I suspect that there is something wrong with pc bios recognizing the drive. But the controller has its own bios.
Unfortunately there is no option in pc bios to select pci card from the list of bootable devices.
I did not check the drive with any other os.
Sorry for not providing any files like grub.conf, lspci output. I will be able to supply them later.

I do not have it now - I am at work now. But I do not think it is a grub problem.
As I wrote before - gentoo minimal installation cd can see the disk. But after reboot grub even does not show up. So it looks like the bios does not get to mbr of the disk.

Dear cokehabit
I think you did not read my first message correctly.
I wrote:
"I created boot floppy with grub and tried to boot to this disk form it, the result was".
That is why I could see the error.
If I try to boot without the floppy than grub which I set up on the hdd during gentoo live cd session does not show up.
Is that clear now ?

If GRUB's tab-completion shows that you don't have any disks, then it is indeed a BIOS problem.
Code: | grub> root (hd<press tab> |
If your BIOS has an option to boot from SCSI, try that.
If not, then try plugging the harddrive into one of the motherboard's IDE connectors instead of the RAID controller (you may need to jumper the drive for "32GB clip" if your motherboard's BIOS is too old to handle a 160GB drive). |
