I have been using Amarok 1.2.4 for ages without problems. Today I tried to upgrade to the latest stable version, 1.3.6.

The compile failed and so I decided to manually unmerge 1.2.4 then try to re-merge 1.3.6. The compile failed again, and even worse, this time I can't downgrade as portage can't find my 1.2.4 ebuild!!! Any idea what's going wrong?

The error messages when I emerge amarok 1.3.6 under KDE 3.4.1 are as follows:

Code:
<<BLAH>>
make[1]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/amarok-1.3.6/work/amarok-1.3.6'
make: *** [all] Error 2

!!! ERROR: media-sound/amarok-1.3.6 failed.
!!! Function kde_src_compile, Line 173, Exitcode 2
!!! died running emake, kde_src_compile:make
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, NOT this status message.

Here is what I imagine is the most important part:

No, I have to use arts since I don't have hardware mixing and I certainly don't want to bother trying with dmix. amarok worked fine before with arts! Why is it going wrong now?

The Amarok Arts Plugin is not maintained atm (see their website). I installed amarok together with the xine backend. Works like a charm.

I did
Code:
USE="-arts xine" emerge amarok
and it installed fine.

However it doesn't run as the bash outputs below show:

Code:
me@PCname ~ $ amarokapp
QLayout: Adding KToolBar/mainToolBar (child of QVBox/unnamed) to layout for PlaylistWindow/PlaylistWindow
STARTUP
Segmentation fault

Code:
me@PCname ~ $ amarok
amaroK: [Loader] Starting amarokapp..
amaroK: [Loader] Don't run gdb, valgrind, etc. against this binary! Use amarokapp.

Here's what I typed and what output I got. I am completely new to gdb so it probably isn't the best output possible.

Have you upgraded to gcc-3.4.4 already? Maybe there's a mixup.

Code:
*  sys-devel/gcc
      Latest version available: 3.4.4-r1
      Latest version installed: 3.4.4-r1

So I am up to date on that.

Yes, in a way you are. But you don't have it properly setup it seems. I assume amarok was compiled with gcc-3.4.4 (I can't tell for sure because you didn't paste the output of gcc-config -l). But it still links to /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.6/libstdc++.so.5 as you can see in the gdb output. It shouldn't. Have you properly followed the gcc upgrade guide? It seems you missed a step or two.

When I do "gcc-config -l" I get:

Code:

So what arguments should I pass to "fix_libtool_files.sh"?

I ran
Code:
fix_libtool_files.sh 3.3.6
and then tried to emerge amarok. I still get exactly the same compile-time error as before.

gcc-config -l still gives me the same output as before too.

it will do, your GCC profile has been upgraded and as long as it is the same path as is in your CHOST then you are fine

Code:

/bin/sh ../../../../../libtool --silent --tag=CXX --mode=link i686-pc-linux-gnu-g++  -Wno-long-long -Wundef -ansi -D_XOPEN_SOURCE=500 -D_BSD_SOURCE -Wcast-align -Wconversion -Wchar-subscripts -Wall -W -Wpointer-arith -DNDEBUG -DNO_DEBUG -O2 -O3 -march=athlon-xp -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -Wformat-security -Wmissing-format-attribute -Wno-non-virtual-dtor -fno-exceptions -fno-check-new -fno-common -DQT_CLEAN_NAMESPACE -DQT_NO_ASCII_CAST -DQT_NO_STL -DQT_NO_COMPAT -DQT_NO_TRANSLATION    -o libamarokarts.la -rpath /usr/kde/3.4/lib -L/usr/kde/3.4/lib -L/usr/qt/3/lib -L/usr/lib    -avoid-version -no-undefined -Wl,--no-undefined -Wl,--allow-shlib-undefined amarokarts.lo

here there is -O2 -O3 -march=athlon-xp -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer, ecc.. in your make.conf which CFLAGS had you used?

I did
Code:
source /etc/profile
and the compile failed in exactly the same way as before at exactly the same place.

My CFLAGS do match the gcc -l output.

Here are the relevant parts of my make.conf if this helps. I am running an Athlon XP3200+ system by the way.

Code:
CFLAGS="-O3 -march=athlon-xp -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
MAKEOPTS="-j2"
FEATURES="sfperms candy"
USE="3dnow 3dnowext aac aalib aim alsa arts audiofile bzlib cddb cdparanoia cdr cdrom \

Have you tried to compile it with generic CFLAGS?

Something like:
Code:

CFLAGS="-O2 -march=i686"

try compiling amarok with out arts support put
Code:
-arts
in your make.conf in the use flags. and add
Code:
xine
to your use flags or if you don't want xine universal add a line for amarok in package.use. then try re-emerging amarok.

did you define any LDFLAGS in make.conf?

Try LDFLAGS="" emerge amarok
