I've been having problems with my GF6600(AGP) for quite some time now. It all started back in windows xp . For example when i played games, textures started to flicker in all colors of the rainbow(looks like overheating). Later i got another issue, starting any Direct3D application (i think) would crash windows (for example when i paly movie with media player). Eventualy after one of these crashes windows didn't recover So i tried reinstalling windows, immediately after reinstall i ran media player and windows crashed again and failed to start (so i thought this was a sign from God to use linux fulltime). Now on Linux if, i enalbe AGP, X freezes and i get Xid errors(with both 71x and 81x drivers). So i gues my hardware is responsible for this. Now for the question, how to pinpoint the cause of the problem? Is there any way to test my GF6600 & Motherboardfor hardware errors? (maybe there is some kind of program for this, me memtest or smth.) Maybe someone who had similar experience could help me.
here's my hardware:
AMD Sempron 3100+
Epox 8HEAI (VIA K8T890CD + VT8237R AGPset)
GeForce 6600
Edit:
I just noticed interesting thing, both my video card and motherboard SHOULD support AGP 8X but:
Code: | cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/card
Fast Writes: Supported
SBA: Supported
AGP Rates: 4x 2x 1x
Registers: 0x1f000217:0x00000000 |
Code: | cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/host-bridge
Host Bridge: PCI device 1106:0238 (VIA Technologies, Inc.)
Fast Writes: Not Supported
SBA: Supported
AGP Rates: 4x 2x 1x
Registers: 0x1f000207:0x00000000 |

This sounds very similar to when my old FX5900XT started dying with bad memory chips. It needed replacing - ironically with a 6600GT (under warranty, it was only 9 months old).
You _could_ try underclocking the card's memory, but short of swapping in another card to check your setup it's hard to say 100% that it's a faulty card. _________________ Jingle Jangle Jewellery |
