I'm running the latest gentoo sources with ieee802.11 stack and ipw2200 support built into the kernel. I have also installed the firmware.

Now when i run iwconfig on eth1 i get "no wireless extension"

I have a feeling that everything will work if i get rid of all this stuff in the kernel and install the drivers. But thats a pain, and whats the point of kernel support if it doesn't work. So I'm wondering if anybody with the same hard ware can point me in the right direction.

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_ipw2200

According to this wiki I need to enable a couple of things in the kernel. But things like [*] Hotplug firmware loading support

Are disabled, well this is what it looks like -- Hotplug firmware loading support

Watching my boot up screen I now see I'm getting the error

IPW2200 failed error -5.
Anyone know what thats all about?

One other thing... is the startup information I see on the screen written to a log every boot, so I could get a closer look at the problem?

i've been having some of the exact same issues. they were either caused by a.) an upgrade to the 2.6.14 kernel or b.) an upgrade to x86 GNOME, which brought with it an update to udev-077.

here's my dmesg:
Code:
ipw2200: Detected Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection
ipw2200: Unable to load firmware: -1
ipw2200: Unable to load firmware: -1
ipw2200: failed to register network device
ACPI: PCI interrupt for device 0000:02:02.0 disabled
ipw2200: probe of 0000:02:02.0 failed with error -5
i've followed the wiki instructions to the letter (the LED option caused some issues, incidentally), and am still returning the above.

i'm currently in the process of downgrading my udev, b/c another thread seemed to indicate that the ipw2200 drivers don't like udev above 058. here's an external thread that posts a fix for that (didn't work for me).

http://openthought.org/blosxom.cgi/Blog/Computers/Organizations/Home/firmware_and_udev.writeback

anybody else has any ideas, i'd love to hear them b/c the wireless which once worked fine is no longer operative.

update: downgraded from udev 077 (x86) to 070 and got rid of the above error. wireless is back.
