|
|
I've just installed a new server (Gentoo SELinux).
It has to server multiple goals, but not at the same time so i can optimize a kernel for each goal.
I want to run some LAN Game servers on it
(UT2004, CS, BF2, ...)
But i have some questions about the configuration of the kernel.
1 ) Preemption Model
Do i use "No Forced Preemption" or will this not be good enough because on a gameserver timing is important.
2 ) Preempt Te Big Kernel Lock
The same goes here. Do I use it or not.
3 ) Timer frequency.
My question is, will i get any preformance difference when i configure the server as a "real" server or i go more or less the Desktop way.
I don't have that much experiance with gameservers so i don't know how much difference it's going to make.
Some system info
AMD Athlon XP 2400+
512 MB DDR
Any other optimalizations that could change the performance of the server are also welcome. |

bump.
I would also like to know about optimizations for the kernel to improve game server performance.
Specifically I run counter-strike 1.6 servers and one cs:source server. Right now the server fps on the 32 man public 1.6 server I run is not stable. It stays around 230 FPS but regularly drops down below 100 even below 50 fps.
my timer frequency is set to 250 now but after doing some research I think I'll try it at 1000 and see if that helps the server fps. If anyone has some specific tips for "boosting" the fps to 300 fps or more for a 1.6 server those suggestions would be much appreciated. I am also running a preemptible kernel but I have not tried any of the low latency patches or different scheduling patches. Any recommendations?
