I was thinking of getting a USB TV turner. I would need one that did NTSC, and hardware mpeg4 or mpeg2 compression. Anyone have any suggestions? |

Get a pci tuner or switch to windows
There are very few usb tuners supported right now. I think there is limited support for one of the pinnacle usb tuners, and a couple others, but I don't think there are any with hardware encoders. Good luck though, and if you find one that works well, do post back. I have a usb tuner from compro (no hardware encoder) which works well in windows, but not at all on linux. There are a couple other threads here on the topic, but I don't think anyone has a working USB tuner under linux. |

I was under the impression that Hauppage's WinTV-PVR USB2 was supported (or at least working) under linux? I seem to recall seeing some threads about it.... |

I think I remember seeing that too, I'm not sure if anyone has them working or not.
Anyway, I should have mentioned this earlier, but you might find this site helpful:

Be careful with the WINTV-PVR-USB2 -- they recently respun the hardware, and they DO NOT have a working driver yet for the respun hardware. They are working on it, and making progress daily, but it will still be some time before the driver is finished. So, if you get an old model, you're cool. A new one, and you'll have to wait.
Go with the ConnectX USB TV tuner, I believe that one does work. |
