I've been having this intermittent problem with my server in recent months. I've got a 120GB drive as the main drive and two 320GB drives.

Occasionally either of the 320GB hard drives will not be able to be read.
Code:

yang mirror # ls -l
ls: backups: Input/output error
ls: recording: Input/output error
total 36

When I turn the machine off and take the case apart and touch the hard drives... one of the 320GB ones will be cold... which means the power has cut out and it has just stopped spinning.

What the hell is going on? Could this be a problem with the PSU? It is a cheap one... so maybe I could try replacing that?

The PSU would be my first bet...
and the easiest to check by changing it...

Ok. I've just changed it. I'll see what happens...

Is there a log file somewhere that I can look at when this sort of stuff happens?

Alright it happened again even with the new PSU.

What the hell is going on?

Could it be a problem with the IDE controller on the board?

Are there log files anywhere where I could look at to see if I can diagnose the problem?

Hm, I'm not sure if this would give you valuable output but the smartmontools package can monitor the S.M.A.R.T. interface of your harddisk. Any critical errors to do with the drive itself show up there.

Super Handy Gentoo Wiki Reference for smartmontools

Thanks for that! I'll keep an eye on it using that package and see what happens.
