I have a Dell laptop which is staying inside a docking station usually. During boot the lid must not be closed or Gentoo won't boot. It gets past the grub-screen but then stalls. Unfortunately I cannot see what messages appear as the console output is not visible during boot on my docking monitor (this is a separate problem I have to tackle). When I make sure the lid is not closed it boots ok and I can close the lid afterwards. However this is a cumbersome workaround which I would like to avoid.

I'm using kernel 2.6.22-gentoo-r8 SMP

Any ideas on how to tackle this?

I've moved to the 2.6.22-gentoo-r9 kernel and added framebuffer options to the grub config. And now things are fine, I can see the console during boot and also the lid can stay closed without problems. So the problem has gone away entirely by moving to a new version of the kernel.
